‘Barbie‘ and ‘Oppenheimer‘ were released on 21st July 2023 thus marking a historic moment in cinema history. Cillian Murphy plays the role of Robert J. Oppenheimer in Christopher Nolan’s latest. It is unusual for 2 big-show movies to be released on the same day but the move was pre-planned by Barbie’s Warner Bros.
Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer and Greta Gerwig’s Barbie were 2 of the most anticipated movies of the year. Barbie is based on the iconic fashion doll from Mattel, whereas Oppenheimer follows the life of physicist, Robert J. Oppenheimer who helped the United States develop the first atomic bomb.
The reason for the movies being released on the same date comes after Christopher Nolan had a public fallout with Warner Bros. in 2021. Though the 2 movies are of completely different genres, fans have pinned them against each other.
Barbie vs Oppenheimer
‘Barbenheimer’ was trending among movie-goers. The only thing that was getting talked about at the box office were these two movies. Tickets were instantly sold out for both and the shows were packed from the very first day.
Nolan who is considered one of the best directors of all time, has gone above and beyond for the filming of Oppenheimer, a thing which he does in almost every movie. Oppenheimer was filmed on a combination of IMAX 65mm and 65mm large format film, a first of its kind.
Greta Gerwig directs ‘Barbie’ which stars Hollywood heart-throbs Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as Barbie and Ken. The cast also includes America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Issa Rae, Rhea Perlman, and Will Ferrell. Oppenheimer also boasts the top Hollywood A-listers with the likes of Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Rami Malek, Florence Pugh, and Kenneth Branagh in the cast.

In an interview, Cillian Murphy said he does not mind playing Ken in Barbie 2. This was more than enough to send fans into a frenzy. Barbenheimer memes were already prevalent in everyone’s timeline and now Cillian Murphy has contributed even more to it.

It would be interesting to see Cillian transition from his role as Oppenheimer to Ken. From the world of atoms and explosions, we wonder how Cillian will switch to Dolls and Toys. One thing is for sure, Cillian is known for the diversity in the roles he has done till now.

Probably, in an alternate universe, there exists a Barbie movie with Cillian as Ken and an Oppenheimer movie with Ryan in the lead role.
