Revenant Episode 4 reveals that Hae-sang and San-young discover the numbers 21 and 176 from their conversation with the possessed San-young. San-young regains consciousness, realizing she was under the control of the malevolent entity. The next day, they search for evidence at Kang-mu’s residence.
Detective Mun-chun urges Hong-sae to investigate the burnt wrist marks and establish connections with the suicides and San-young. Hae-sang and San-young find a hidden room with San-young’s childhood items. They learn about a missing girl’s case in Jangjin-ri, where a 9-year-old named Mokdan was abducted. Mun-chun discovers a burnt book with a newspaper excerpt related to the case.
The newswriter’s daughter reveals her father’s suicide with the same burnt wrist marks, linking it to the deaths. Hong-sae believes there’s a connection, as Kang-mu, San-young’s father, was investigating the missing girl’s case. Hae-sang and San-young discover that the girl’s death was part of a ritual mentioned in her father’s book, with page numbers 21 and 176.
Confrontations and Haunting Revelations in Baekchagol Village
As Hae-sang and San-young delve deeper into their investigation, they uncover that the sinister rituals took place in Baekchagol village. Upon arriving there, San-young discovers from the village elders that her father, Kang-mu, had married her mother, who hails from Baekchagol. Filled with anger and confusion, San-young confronts her mother, demanding the truth about her birthplace and the reasons for her mother’s deception. Her mother pleads with her to leave the village, but San-young abruptly ends the call when she hears the distressed cries of the elders.
Entering a nearby hall, San-young comes face-to-face with the lifeless body of an elderly man, surrounded by malevolent spirits. Sensing the imminent danger, Hae-sang urgently instructs the citizens to seek shelter in their homes and secure their doors. He also enlightens San-young about the nature and purpose of these wandering spirits. San-young realizes that she is not confronted by just one, but more than 20 malicious entities lurking in the village.
During their quest to locate the cursed dolls, Hae-sang realizes that the influx of wandering spirits is a consequence of an elderly lady burning the dolls, hoping to commune with her deceased daughter. Alarmed, Hae-sang races to protect San-young, who is attempting to flee the village. However, as she stumbles and falls, she finds herself gazing into a mirror, where she witnesses the sight of her late father, wearing a haunting smile.
Unveiling Family Secrets and Intriguing Connections
San-young’s mother raises suspicions as a character, as she appears to be hiding something from her daughter. Whether she is protecting her or is connected to the evil entity that caused harm to the young girl remains uncertain. This adds an intriguing layer to her character.
While the episode features graphic and gory ghost visuals, it lacks the element of fear as the focus is primarily on San-young’s quest to uncover her late father’s intentions. The story evokes emotions as it reveals the absence of a meaningful relationship between San-young and her mother, compounded by the curse her father has passed on to her.
However, the episode successfully piques curiosity, particularly when San-young discovers her parents’ marriage and her mother’s deception about her birthplace. This raises questions about her mother’s true nature and whether San-young herself is a reincarnation of the missing girl or possessed by her spirit. The directors skillfully connect the detectives’ storyline with Hae-sang and San-young’s search, adding to the intrigue.
Both duos find themselves investigating the same person or case, albeit for different reasons. The mysterious connection among the four main protagonists adds an engaging dynamic. It remains to be seen whether Hong-sae plays a significant role in the spiritual connection or if he is simply drawn to San-young due to personal interest. This interplay between the characters keeps the viewers intrigued.
Looking ahead, the upcoming episodes promise to introduce more types of ghosts, although the purpose behind educating the viewers about them remains unclear. As the story progresses, we anticipate delving deeper into the origins of the main evil spirit, bringing us closer to its source.
Out of 5, we would rate Revenant Episode 4, a 5. An absolute delight and thriller
