The Life of Stan Lee

Stane Lee, born Stanley Martin Lieber on December 28, 1922, began his career in the comic book industry working for Timely Comics which later came to be known as Marvel Comics. In his early years, Stan Lee worked many roles which included writing, art direction, editing, etc.

Prior to the 1950s, superhero comics included superheroes as perfect beings without any flaws in them. It was during this time that Lee’s creative genius flourished and he along with legendary artist, Jack Kirby co-created many iconic superheroes.

Fantastic Four were the first superheroes created by the iconic duo. Lee revolutionized the characters. In his comics, the superheroes had their own flaws, they were far from perfect and often struggled with everyday problems in life, just like everyone else. This resonated well with the audiences as until then superheroes were seen as perfect and infallible.

Following the success of The Fantastic Four, Lee also co-created Hulk, Thor, Iron Man, and X-Men, and the most famous of them all, Spider-man. In his comics, the characters were seen living in a shared universe which resulted in some of the best crossovers. Fans really loved the idea of seeing some of their favorite superheroes come together.

Apart from creating comics, Stan Lee played a vital role in spearheading the success of Marvel. The success that his characters brought, led to him being a prominent figure and also the Ambassador for Marvel Comics. He played an important role in expanding Marvel’s reach through different mediums. He advocated for the characters to be implemented into movies. Stan Lee also made appearances on numerous TV shows and was a regular at conventions.

Stan Lee’s efforts led to the formation of Marvel Studios and Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Lee became extremely popular and recognizable, and we believe his cameo appearances in the movies have a lot to do with it.

In his prosperous career, Lee received multiple awards for his contributions to the entertainment industry. He received the National Medal of Arts from the United States Government in 2008. He was also inducted into the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame and Jack Kirby Hall of Fame.

Even till the very end, Stan Lee was a strong advocate for Marvel. Tragically, he passed away on November 12, 2018, at the age of 95.

Stane Lee’s catchphrase ‘Excelsior’ became synonymous with his outlook on life as a person. Stan Lee shaped the foundation for modern superheroes. His legacy will forever go on and continue to inspire millions of people around the world.
