Within a week of its release, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has garnered more than a whopping $120 million in the box offices of The United States and Canada, and $88 million worldwide, for a combined total of over $200 million.
Sony’s animated sequel has made the second-highest opening weekend only behind ‘The Super Mario Bros.’ movie which made $146.4 million and is the sixth best for an animated movie.
The first movie, ‘Into the Spider-Verse (2018) opened with $35 million and went on to make $385 million worldwide. Across the Spider-Verse which is a continuation in the universe, was originally expected to make around $80 million which is how much went into actually producing the movie. So even if it had hit that number, it would have been a success, but the movie surpassed all expectations and webbed in huge numbers. On the popular critic review website, ‘Rotten Tomatoes’ over 95% of the reviews are positive with a rating of 8.7 out of 10. It has been on par with some of the more recent Marvel movies and only is expected to keep the momentum going.
Sony Pictures took the No.1 spot in the box office charts for the weekend but Disney has 3 movies in the top-5 list. The live-action remake of ‘The Little Mermaid’ is currently sitting in second place with $117 million in the opening week. The third Spot goes to Rob Sarage’s ‘The Boogeyman’ while another Marvel franchise ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3’ takes the fourth spot.
‘Spiderman-Across the Spider-Verse’ is the sequel to ‘Spider-man: Into The Spider-Verse’ featuring the Marvel Comics character, Miles Morales. The sequel is shared across a set of multiple Universes (or spider-verses to be more precise). In the movie Miles Morales and along with Gwen Stacy, travel along the Spider-verses to save other Spider-people from ‘The Spot’. With a total run-time of 140 minutes, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is the longest animated film to be produced by an American Studio (Colombia Pictures and Sony Pictures Animation in association with Marvel Entertainment).
Can Spider-Man: Across the Spiderverse beat Spiderman No Way Home?
Tom Holland’s Spiderman: No Way Home (2021) is the 7th highest-grossing film of all time which earned $ 260 million in the opening week itself and has currently grossed a total of more than $ 1 billion. Currently sitting at over $ 200 million after a week, it’s safe to say that Spiderman: Across the Spider-Verse has the potential to catch up to the American Superhero film.
