‘Oppenheimer‘ is being distributed under Universal Pictures. Fans may be surprised as previously all of Christopher Nolan’s movies were distributed under Warner Bros. Christopher Nolan and Warner Bros. nearly worked together two decades before having a public fallout in 2021.
Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer is based on the physicist Robert J. Oppenheimer who helped the United States build their first ever nuclear weapons. Cillian Murphy plays the lead role in the film alongside Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Florence Pugh, Kenneth Branagh, and Rami Malek. The movie which is based on the book ‘American Prometheus’ is all set for a theatrical release on July 21, 2023.

Christopher Nolan vs Warner Bros.
For almost two decades, Nolan has worked solely with Warner Bros. and created some iconic films in those two decades. Interstellar (2014), Inception (2010), and The Batman Trilogy are just a few blockbusters resulting from the partnership between them.
Christopher Nolan’s decision to leave Warner Bros. comes after the studio announced its decision to release movies in theaters, as well as its streaming platform, HBO Max. Nolan was critical of the decision as he believed in separating theatrical releases from streaming platforms.

Unlike any working relationship between a filmmaker and a major studio, occasional creative differences are common; but this wasn’t the case. Also, their last movie, Tenet (2020) underperformed at the box office, but the pandemic can be blamed for that one.
Apple, Sony, and Universal were the three main competitors looking to bring Christopher Nolan on board. Apple could not meet Nolan’s demand of theatrical window request, which was to release the movie on streaming services, 100 days after its debut.
Nolan was considering Sony but chose Universal. Big-Blockbuster movies often do not release on the same day and are scheduled a few days apart, but Barbie (2023) is all set to release on the same day as Oppenheimer.

Warner Bros. Barbie, directed by Greta Gerwig is all set to battle it out with Oppenheimer on July 21, 2023. With many fans set to watch both movies, it will be interesting to see how Christopher Nolan’s movie does at the box office.
