The Witcher with Henry Cavill will return for a 3rd season on Netflix. Here you get all the info on the start, plot and cast of the new episodes of the fantasy epic with Geralt, Ciri and Yennefer.

Warning, spoilers for The Witcher: The second season of The Witcher’s fantasy series leaves us after eight new episodes with a nasty cliffhanger and the urge to directly binge the next season. The good news: The Witcher Season 3 is definitely coming to Netflix. The bad news: We will have to wait until the new episodes start. We have summarized here when we can expect season 3 on Netflix and how it continues for Geralt, Ciri and Yennefer.

The Witcher Season 3 Release Date: When will it be released?

Filming on season 3 of The Witcher began in April 2022, with locations including Italy, Croatia, Slovenia, England and Wales. In July, filming had to be stopped because Henry Cavill tested positive for Corona. Filming officially ended at the beginning of September.

Netflix has already revealed at the TUDUM event that The Witcher season 3 will be available in summer 2023. Thus, we can expect new episodes between June and August 2023. Unfortunately, there is no exact start date yet.

But Netflix has of course made provisions to supply us with new The Witcher content during the long break. The four-part prequel miniseries The Witcher: Blood Origin, which takes a closer look at the past of the continent and focuses on important events like the Conjunction of the Spheres and the creation of the first Witcher, will start on December 25, 2022. A second animated film is also in the works.

Here’s the first teaser for The Witcher Blood Origin

Is there already a trailer for The Witcher Season 3?

Unfortunately, there is no official teaser or trailer yet. But Netflix has already published a first poster for the third season:

Template: Which novel is The Witcher Season 3 based on?

While the first season introduced the world of Andrzej Sapkowski’s Witcher saga by filming several short stories from the anthologies The Last Wish and The Sword of Providence, The Witcher Season 2 was devoted mainly to the first novel in the main pentalogy series, The Heir of the Elves. Season 3 adapts the plot of the second volume, titled The Time of Contempt.

Warning, spoilers for The Witcher season 2: In season 2 of The Witcher, Geralt (Henry Cavill), Ciri (Freya Allan) and Yennefer (Anya Chalotra) finally came together. Meanwhile, across the continent, various factions are positioning themselves to take control of Ciri for various reasons. Here, season 3 should now provide answers as to what exactly the kingdoms of the North or Redania, the Wild Hunt and the Empire of Nilfgaard are up to.

Especially Nilfgaard will be more in focus in season 3 after the true identity of Emperor Emhyr var Emreis (Bart Edwards) was revealed to us for the first time at the very end of season 2. The ruler of Nilfgaard aka the White Flame, is none other than Ciri’s biological father. This was previously known to us as Duny of the Alder Forest and was thought to be deceased.

With a (spoiler-free) look at the novel The Time of Contempt, Ciri’s magical training is advanced by Yennefer in Season 3. The primary setting here will again be the magic school Aretuza on the island of Thanedd. On Thanedd we can also expect a shocking event and at the same time the climax of the first three seasons, where the course is set for the rest of the series. The most epic and dangerous battle for Geralt so far can also be marveled at.

Other events and mysteries that await us in The Witcher Season 3

  • The elves around Francesca Findabair found their own kingdom.
  • We can continue to puzzle over who Rien’s client is.
  • The Scoia’tael, a rebel group of elves and non-humans, fights against discrimination.
  • Will we learn more about Ciri’s origins, the mysterious Elder blood and the prophecy?

Season 2 surprised fans of the original with some changes and new storylines that closed narrative gaps in the books and already incorporated later revelations. So we can assume that season 3 will not implement the novel The Time of Contempt 1-to-1 and we can look forward to new mysteries and monsters.

Of course, the central trio of characters from The Witcher will be back for season 3. Henry Cavill, Freya Allan and Anya Chalotra will once again embody Geralt of Riva, Ciri and Yennefer.

Of course, some familiar faces from The Witcher’s huge cast from Season 2 will also return. Whether Geralt’s witch family from Khaer Morhen will also be back is not yet known.

In addition to numerous characters already introduced, Season 3 will also bring a few new characters into play. Already confirmed by Netflix were:

  • Meng’er Zhang as Milva – a huntress from the Brokilon Forest.
  • Christelle Elwin as Mistle – a member of the rat gang
  • Hugh Skinner as Prince Radovid – King Vizimir’s little brother
  • Robbie Amell as Gallatin – fighter of the Scoia’tael

Other new additions for season 3 include Sean Cernow and Frances Pooley. Jim Sturgeon takes on the role of Aplegatt, while Rochelle Rose and Safiyya Ingar are featured as magicians Margarita Laux-Antille and Keira Metz.

Ryan Hayes plays the wizard Artaud Terranova, while the Polish actress Michalina Olszanska can be seen as a magician. Since there will be a big gathering of the magical community in season 3, many more supporting actors: inside will be seen in the course of this event.

Unfortunately, one actor will no longer be part of the cast as of the third season. Chris Fulton, who played the villain Rience in season 2, will be replaced by Sam Woolf in season 3. The possible reason for this is Fulton’s casting in the 7th season of the series Outlander, which was filmed almost at the same time.

What do you expect from the 3rd season of The Witcher?
