The Netflix series “Sandman” is about the king of stories, one of the seven endless ones, called Dream. The streaming service’s own production is based on the popular DC comics by Neil Gaiman (“Good Omens“, ” Anansi Boys “), who is involved in the series implementation as Executive Producer. Gaiman also developed the comic templates for “Lucifer” and “Marvel’s Eternals”.
Despite the remarkable debut of “Sandman,” no second season of the Netflix series has been announced yet. Comic book author and series creator Neil Gaiman explains on Twitter why the extension of the show is currently still uncertain.
According to Gaiman, data collection for the series has just been completed, which is why analysis of the series can only begin almost two months after the start of “Sandman”. According to the creator of “Sandman”, the reason why this took so long is that his show wasn’t designed for binge-watching.
Viewers often don’t watch the DC show in one go, but usually, only consume one or two episodes a day. This complicates the analysis. Netflix is known for producing series that you can watch in no time. Since new series and shows are often available on the first day with all episodes.
Netflix has often been criticized for this. Competitors like Amazon Prime Video usually release the new episodes of their original series on a weekly basis. This is currently happening with The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.
Also “Sandman” could have benefited from such a release type, especially if it is to be renewed for a second season.
Not only the more difficult analysis, but also the high production costs that were raised for “Sandman” could explain the delay at Netflix. With the high budget for the first season, a potential second season will probably have to budget the same if not more.
It remains to be seen how and whether “Sandman” will continue. Analyzing the data could take another few weeks. Netflix may also surprise us and announce another season at the upcoming fan event “TUDUM“.
Sandman Season 2: Potential release date
Production is expected to start in the course of 2023. It can therefore be assumed that “Sandman” will start on Netflix in spring 2024 at the earliest. We won’t know for sure until filming is finished.
Sandman Season 2: Storyline
In the first season of “Sandman”, the first two comic books, “Preludes & Nocturnes” and “The Doll’s House”, were used as templates. Volume 3, “Sandman’s Dreamland”, contains three short stories, two of which, “The Dream of a Thousand Cats” and “Kalliope”, have already been treated as bonus episodes.
Instead, in Season 2, we jump straight to Volume 4, “The Age of Mist.” Here, Dream travels to hell to save his old love, Nada, after he once banished her. In doing so, however, he clashes with Lucifer. A conflict already hinted at in the final scene of Season 1.
Volume 5, “Across the Sea to Heaven”, is also to be adapted in Season 2. It features a reunion with Barbie, whom you already know as Rose Walker’s roommate from Season 1. In any case, it cannot currently be assumed that the Netflix series will completely detach itself from the templates.
Sandman Season 2: Where to Watch
“Sandman” can be seen exclusively on the streaming service as a Netflix in-house production and will probably never be seen on free or pay TV, other streamers will also get nothing.
