CloverWorks Ends Fiscal 2022 With Loss

Don't miss

Renowned anime studio CloverWorks had several great and successful anime titles in fiscal year 2022, which spans from April 2022 to March 2023, but still ends in the red.

Loss despite top titles

If you only look at the popularity of the titles released, CloverWorks definitely doesn’t have to hide for the past year of 2022. Because with “Bocchi the Rock!” and “Spy x Family,” the anime studio managed two absolute hits. And the second season of “Shadows House” can also be confidently mentioned in this context.

Nevertheless, the studio closes the fiscal year 2022 with a loss of 29 million yen (about 185,000 euros). Unfortunately, with a few exceptions, an anime studio itself is not usually represented on the production committee and is merely commissioned and paid by it. This means that there are no financial risks for the studio, but also no additional profit in the event of great success.

In the fiscal year 2021, a profit of 46 million yen (about 293,000 euros) could still be achieved in comparison. Relevant titles during this period would have been “My Dress-Up Darling,” “Akebi’s Sailor Uniform,” the first season of “Shadows House,” and the original anime “Tokyo 24th Ward.”

CloverWorks was originally named “Koenji Studio” and was affiliated with A-1 Pictures. However, on October 1, 2018, it was relaunched as an independent studio, and in the process was renamed to its current name. It belongs to Aniplex as a subsidiary.
