‘The Penguin‘ is an upcoming limited series which is created by Lauren LeFranc. The series will be based on the DC Comics character, Penguin, and is a spin-off from the 2022 film, ‘The Batman‘. The primary focus will be on the Penguin’s rise to power in Gotham.
The Penguin is being produced by 6th & Idaho along with DC Studios and Dylan Clark Productions. Filming of the series began in March 2023, before being suspended due to the 2023 WGA Strike. Here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming Batman spin-off.
The Penguin Release Date
No official release date has been confirmed and the series will definitely be subject to more delays. The ongoing SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes are responsible for this. As per Warner Bros. Television, The Penguin is set to release on Max in 2024 and will consist of eight episodes.
With production yet to be complete, we do not expect the series until late 2024.
Who is The Penguin?
The Penguin aka Oswald Chesterfield Cobblepot is a Gotham City mobster and one of Batman’s most enduring enemies. In DC Comics, he is often seen wearing a monocle, a top hat, and a morning suit while carrying his signature umbrella.
The series follows one week after the events of The Batman (2022). The Riddler (Edward Nashton) manages to destroy the seawall around Gotham, successfully flooding the city. In the aftermath, Nashton befriends another inmate (possibly the Joker) while Batman is busy trying to help Gotham recover.
The so-called Penguin is the former chief lieutenant of Carmine Falcone, who was killed by Riddler in the original movie. Apart from that the rest of the plot of the series remains unknown. With filming yet to be finished, it is unclear how it will impact the series.
