Sweet Magnolias Season 3 Review: The absence of deep emotional connection between characters

Don't miss

All of our lovely magnolias are invited! The third season of Sweet Magnolias has just started streaming on Netflix, thus the moment has finally arrived. And we don’t know about you, but ever since we watched that shocking season two finale episode, we’ve been anticipating this day. We were shocked when Ryan (Michael Shenefelt) dropped down on one knee and proposed to Helen (Heather Headley), as well as when Cal (Justin Bruening) was arrested for hitting a man in the face at Sullivan’s.

If you recall, season two ended with Helen accepting an unexpected marriage proposal from her ex, Ryan (Michael Shenfelt). The episode begins with Helen inviting her current lover into her home for a serious discussion, but we are unable to find out what Helen’s response is because the show has already finished. But the subject of that chat is not whether she is engaged or not. Let’s find out if the show is worth watching.

Sweet Magnolias Season 3: What happens between the trio?

After hitting a man inside Sullivan’s restaurant in the Netflix show Sweet Magnolias, Helen, an attorney, had to secure Cal (Justin Bruening), Maddie’s boyfriend (JoAnna Garcia Swisher),’s release from custody. After Erik, Maddie, Cal, and Dana Sue (Brooke Elliot) have left, she makes a commitment to help him with his case and takes the engagement ring out of her purse while still considering her response.

Although Dana Sue and her former husband Ronnie (Brandon Quinn) are back together, they are still getting used to each other. Dana Sue waited a day to tell Ronnie that she had learned she would be receiving a sizable inheritance from her Aunt Frances, which made him panic that she would “forget” such a crucial detail.

Who is Kathy, exactly? Dana Sue is accused of stealing Sullivan’s business by Ronnie’s crazy sister. It’s amazing to watch Wynn Everett portray white-wine-swilling Kathy as if she’s channelling Kristen Wiig’s portrayal of Kathie Lee Gifford. Ronnie warns Kathy to keep her distance from Dana Sue, but we have a sneaking suspicion that Kathy will cause trouble during her entire stay in Serenity.

Maddie now worries about Cal most of the time, not just about his future but also about the men she chooses and why she constantly seems to choose volatile ones.

Sweet Magnolias Season 3: Helen and Ryan’s relationship is a roller-coaster ride

Helen, who is still considering Ryan’s proposal, tells him that she was previously pregnant by him, miscarried the kid, and discovered as a result that she probably will never be able to bear a child. Ryan, who has always been reluctant to have children, has decided to propose since he feels ready for it now. This latest development deals him a fatal blow. Despite how much of a soap opera this show is, Heather Headley is fantastic and brings such gravitas to her moments.

The fact that she ends up sobbing with Ryan in this scene makes it so much more emotional for the two characters and you can tell that they have a history together. Ryan’s suggestion is brought up by Helen to Erik, who is informed that she was urged by Rayn to give it some thought. Erik is completely shocked by the news. “I see,” he replies. That is all I require to know. He is heartbroken. Run the credits.

As we mentioned above, Wynn Everett plays Kathy, Ronnie’s sister, with a campy, slightly schizophrenic feel, but she is equally sassy and smart, as the kids would say, and it’s obvious that she has other reasons for being in Serenity. When are we expected to stop needing assistance? During their man-to-man talk, Erik discloses to Cal their inner troubles. Although it seems corny, It is adorable to this non-toxic male support group.

Sweet Magnolias season 3: Watch it or Skip it?

This is Us meets Ginny & Georgia with a dash of Firefly Lane best describes the mood at Sweet Magnolias.

Sweet Magnolias has undoubtedly created a universe for the characters in the series; each adult is acquainted with one another and has a shared past, and each of their children’s lives is intertwined with one another as well. Additionally, there is comfort in watching a show like this for several seasons and becoming familiar with the highs and lows of the characters. The fact that this program seems like a fantastic one to have in the background is the greatest love we can give it. It’s unthreatening, simple to understand, and simple to pick up again after a brief break. Folding your laundry while you watch is hardly elite television.

SKIP IT! There are at least a dozen compelling tales in Sweet Magnolias, which has a devoted fanbase. While it is undoubtedly binge-able, the issue is that it isn’t always… what’s the word?… good if you are looking for a soapy, relationship-centred melodrama in Ginny & Georgia or Firefly Lane instead.
