Director Matthew Vaughn is interested in making a “Star Wars” movie, as he recently revealed in a podcast. However, he doesn’t have a prequel or sequel in mind, but would rather remake the series.
Forty-six years ago, “Star Wars” launched one of the greatest film series of all time. In recent years, fans have been treated to another trilogy as well as numerous series from the galaxy far, far away, including “The Mandalorian” and the recently released “Ahsoka” series.
However, the quality of the productions declined over time. After “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” left fans joyfully in their cinema seats after a break of many years, the enthusiasm decreased from sequel to sequel. While the aforementioned film still received 93% from the trade press and 85% from the audience at Rotten Tomatoes, only the critics were enthusiastic about “Star Wars: The Last Jedi”. Here, the ratings fell to 91% and 42%. In the case of “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker,” on the other hand, the trade press was less enthusiastic about the film, with 51%, while viewers were much more satisfied, with 86%. The situation is much better in the series sector, but even here there are less popular productions, such as “The Book of Boba Fett“.
Filmmaker Matthew Vaughn, known for works like “Kick-Ass” and “Kingsman: The Secret Service,” recently shared his interest in the franchise on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast (via Comicbook.com). However, the 52-year-old filmmaker would not want to contribute a film in the form of a sequel or prequel, but instead remake the series. Vaughn explained:
“For me, making a ‘Star Wars movie’ means playing with the characters I love. So if someone were to say to me: ‘You want to reboot ‘Star Wars’ and have Luke Skywalker, [Han] Solo and Vader and do your own version of it, everyone would say you’d be an idiot to try it, but that would excite me.’ ‘Star Wars’ is the Skywalker family. And I think that’s where they got it wrong, because they forgot that […] And they did it brilliantly in the series aspect, but it needs an epic new movie and that’s what I would do.”
“Star Wars” is among the most popular representatives of the science fiction genre.
Matthew Vaughn’s upcoming projects
Most recently, Matthew Vaughn took a seat in the director’s chair for the prequel “The King’s Man,” which was released in 2021. With the action thriller “Argylle” set for February 1, 2024, the filmmaker is once again dedicating himself to the genre of the agent* film. The film, starring Henry Cavill (“The Witcher“), Samuel L. Jackson (“Pulp Fiction”), Sofia Boutella (“Star Trek: Beyond”) and Sam Rockwell (“Moon”), recently received its first trailer. In addition, Matthew Vaughn has been signed on as director for the science fiction project “Courage,” which is currently in production. He is also a producer on the remake of “Flash Gordon”, the action comedy “School Fight” and the thriller “I Am Pilgrim”.
Only time will tell whether Matthew Vaughn will one day be allowed to produce a “Star Wars” film. However, if you would like to watch the director’s previous works until then, you can stream the “Kingsman” films and “X-Men: First Decision” at Disney+.
