‘Triggering to watch’: Prime’s new Duggar family docuseries stirs poignant emotions for Olivia Plath

The ‘Welcome to Plathville’ star, Olivia Plath talks about the new Amazon Prime docuseries, ‘Shiny Happy People: Duggar Family Secrets’ which is about the former reality TV show, ‘The Duggars’ and her similar experiences.

“Good afternoon to everyone except for Bill Gothard [and] Michael Pearl,” Olivia, 25, said via her Instagram Story on Saturday, June 3. “If you know, you know that’s a rabbit hole. But I bring it up to say a few days ago, a docuseries dropped on Amazon Prime called Shiny Happy People. That was my life up until a few years ago and oh, [it was] a little triggering to watch.” 

She opened up more about her past and how the show triggered an emotional response.

“That was my life up until a few years ago,” Plath said. “A little triggering to watch, but also there is solidarity in having other people speak up and say, ‘Yep, you’re not crazy, happened to me too. I know about this.’ That is healing in a way.”

Olivia Plath starred in the reality television series, ‘Welcome to Plathville’ which is about the Plathville family, a strong conservative minded couple with 9 children many of which have clashes with their parents as they find it difficult to follow the ideologies being enforced on them by their parents. The show follows their daily lives in rural Georgia and how the family manages to tackle daily challenges amidst a lack of basic necessities. 

She was overwhelmed to see the positive response being shared by her fans and also those with similar experiences. 

“That is healing in a way,” she continued, adding, “The realm in which my public life exists, there’s a lot of things I can’t say, there’s a lot of things I want to say about religion, about my past, about the world that I went right back into” via Instagram.

Amazon Prime on June 2nd launched a four-part docuseries around the former reality TV show ‘The Duggars’ called ‘Shiny Happy People: Duggar Family Secrets’ and is about the lives of Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar, their 19 children and their cult-like religious group. The show features the couple’s daughter Jill Dillard who shares her experiences of growing up in the family. Multiple revelations were made against the couple, including failure to pay the children for the series, elder brother ‘Josh Duggar’s’ molestation scandals who now is currently serving 12 years in federal prison in Texas after being convicted of child-pornography charges. 

Moments after the docuseries was aired, the couple released a statement on their official website stating
“We have always believed that the best chance to repair damaged relationships, or to reconcile differences, is through love in a private setting. We love every member of our family and will continue to do all we can to have a good relationship with each one.”
