The heart-wrenching love story between Charlie and Nick is far from over, because “Heartstopper” season 3 is already a done deal.
Following the successful series debut, Netflix has already renewed “Heartstopper” for a second and third season in May 2022. The touching coming-of-age title about the relationship between Charlie Spring (Joe Locke) and Nick Nelson (Kit Connor) will therefore be with fans for at least another year. But when can we expect Heartstopper season 3 on Netflix?
Sequel confirmed: When will “Heartstopper” season 3 start on Netflix?
In April 2022, the love story between Charlie and Nick caused plenty of crackling on the screens of Netflix audiences, and on August 3, 2023, the British feel-good series entered its second round. Although the streaming service confirmed seasons 2 and 3 in the same breath, no start date has yet been announced for “Heartstopper” season 3.
However, production is gradually entering the hot phase, as an Instagram post reveals that filming for the new episodes began on October 2, 2023:
“And action! ‘Heartstopper’ season 3 is officially in production.”
The cameras are currently rolling again in and around London. Provided there are no unforeseen delays, we can therefore hope for a Netflix launch in summer or fall 2024. This would also mean that the streaming platform would adhere to the usual broadcasting cycle of one year.
Heartstopper Season 3: What’s next?
While the first season adapts the content of the first and second books in the comic series, season 2 is dedicated to the third and fourth volumes, which focus on the school trip to Paris, Nick’s coming out and Charlie’s eating disorder. It would therefore make sense for Alice Oseman and Euros Lyn to adapt the fifth book in “Heartstopper” season 3. In it, Nick is faced with a difficult decision: What should he do after his upcoming graduation? Both nearby and distant universities keep their doors open to him.
The finale of the second season hints that Nick may struggle with this fate… After all, Charlie has confided in him that he has hurt himself because of the bullying – and the anorexia is not yet off the table either. Although Nick is able to get him to promise that Charlie will come to him with any problems in future, it would be an advantage to be able to be there quickly in case of doubt. In addition, the two are about to say the words “I love you” for the first time. We will probably find out how they confess their love in the first episode of the third season, which is entitled “Love”, as an Instagram post from Netflix proves:
If you don’t want to wait until “Heartstopper” season 3 to find out what happens next, you can pre-order comic book number 5 on Amazon now. It will be published on December 7, 2023:
Heartstopper season 3 with possible changes: Will the series deviate from the comic?
Apart from minor changes – such as the introduction of secondary character Imogen (Rhea Norwood) – “Heartstopper” has so far followed the course of the comics. However, many subplots in the series are now so detailed that fans can expect changes in season 3, as comic and screenwriter Alice Oseman revealed to Entertainment Weekly:
“I’m always very keen to preserve what’s in the comics and make sure that all the big, exciting moments are in the show. But honestly, there’s just so much extra room for us to do what we want. Now that we have seasons 1 and 2, we’ve had so much development for the supporting characters: Tao, Elle, Tara, Isaac, even new characters like Imogen. There’s so much new stuff that gives us so much to play with in season 3. I feel very comfortable letting the show be its own thing. In my opinion, the show and the comic are very different, even though it’s a pretty faithful adaptation. I’m looking forward to expanding ‘Heartstopper’ for the series.”
So for those fans who fear too many changes, rest assured: “Heartstopper” will retain the cornerstones of the comics. However, we can also look forward to delving deeper into the stories of the supporting characters.
Cast: Who will be in Heartstopper season 3?
As in season 2, the focus in the third season will probably not be exclusively on Nick and Charlie, but will also continue the stories of Tao, Elle, Tara, Darcy and Isaac. We can therefore expect to see Joe Locke (“Agatha: Circle of Chaos”), Kit Connor (“Rocketman”), William Gao, Yasmin Finney (“Doctor Who”), Corinna Brown, Kizzy Edgell and Tobie Donovan again in the new episodes. In addition, Jenny Walser will once again take on the role of Charlie’s sister Tori, while Rhea Norwood (“Consent”) is expected to portray the character Imogen. Fans of Hollywood cinema are also hoping for the return of Oscar and Emmy winner Olivia Colman (“The Crown”).
Oseman has also announced a new addition to the cast via Instagram: Actor Darragh Hand (“Silent Witness”) will portray the character Michael Holden, who fans of the graphic novels will already be familiar with. Alongside Tori, Michael was the main character in Oseman’s first novel “Solitaire”. In “Heartstopper” season 3, not only Charlie but also Tori will embark on their first love adventure.
“Some of you have already figured it out, but for those of you who didn’t know, we’re excited to welcome Darragh Hand to the ‘Heartstopper’ family as Michael Holden for Season 3. Michael not only appears in the graphic novels, but is also one of the main characters in my very first novel ‘Solitaire’, along with Tori. I was very nervous and excited when I set out to find our Michael. Michael is a quirky, eccentric optimist with a sunny disposition and it was a challenge to find someone who I felt would embody the Michael from the books. But then Darragh came along and warmed our hearts, made us all laugh and was a perfect match for Jenny Walser’s Tori Spring. I can’t wait for you to meet Michael in season 3!”
However, we will have to say goodbye to actor Sebastian Croft, who starred as Ben in the series. As Netflix reports, he will not be appearing in season 3.
