Netflix’s most popular web series of 2021 ‘Squid Games’ is about to be back, this year. The series created a huge stir among the audience with child-like games becoming a matter of life and death. Recently a controversy is being surfacing that the show’s upcoming season will feature another dangerous set of games. But the buzz is about a real-life game that was said to be inspired by ‘Squid Games‘ but turned out to be a disaster for those who participated.
Squid Games inspired Reality Show
‘Squid Games’, is the most popular thriller game series where more than 100 people participate in a game that seems childish but is highly lethal. People die if they go wrong at any point. These people stake their lives for a huge sum of money. Similar to this series, an unscripted reality show was launched where about 450 people were asked to participate and played the game and four million dollars were given to the last one standing.
According to People, it reads- “Through a series of games, each player will be pushed to their limits and forced to ask themselves just how far they’ll go to win, with opportunistic alliances, cutthroat strategies and timely betrayals to follow.”
The original series was already put into question with such visuals and dramatic scenes that are both insane and life-threatening. But the reality show put the contestants in inhumane conditions and were not paid for their participation. People were put into deadly scenarios and many lost their lives; not because of the games but the conditions they were placed.
It revealed that players had been left freezing in a cavernous airplane hanger in Bedford, playing games that required them to hold statue-like poses for nearly 30 minutes.- according to People.
Conditions demanded to be Freeze and Tied
The participants were tasked to be still as a statue for 30 mins in a freezing plane. Some collapsed due to the temperature on the sets. A British boy who participated in the show said that he along with roughly 228 others almost died playing the very first challenge, resulting in immediate elimination from the show on Jan. 23. The game was “Red Light Green Light.”
The original creator of the series regretted saying- “We care deeply about the health of our cast and crew, and the quality of this show. Any suggestion that the competition is rigged or claims of serious harm to players are simply untrue. We’ve taken all the appropriate safety precautions, including after care for contestants – and an independent adjudicator is overseeing each game to ensure it’s fair to everyone,” People.
The series was given immense love and also won Emmy in 2022. Season 2 of Squid Games is coming on Netflix on November 2023.
