James Mangold’s Upcoming ‘Star Wars’ Film: Pushing Boundaries and Revisiting the Alluring Far Away Galaxy

Don't miss

Director James Mangold, known for helming “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” is reportedly planning to work with Lucasfilm once again on an original “Star Wars” film. Interestingly, this wouldn’t be his first foray into the “Star Wars” universe, as he had previously attempted to develop a Boba Fett spin-off movie with a significantly different vision than what was eventually seen in “The Book of Boba Fett.” During a recent appearance on Happy Sad Confused, Mangold revealed that he had written a script that aimed to push the boundaries of what is traditionally accepted within the “Star Wars” universe.

A Bold and Unconventional Vision: James Mangold’s Boba Fett Spin-Off and Its Departure from Traditional “Star Wars” Storytelling

James Mangold confessed that his approach to the Boba Fett spin-off film was considerably daring and might have pushed the boundaries of the “Star Wars” universe. Describing it as a borderline R-rated, single-planet spaghetti Western, he believed that his vision would have made it difficult for the audience to embrace a character like Baby Yoda. Unfortunately, his plans for the movie were abandoned when Lucasfilm shifted its focus to television projects.

Mangold expressed disappointment that his unique take on the film didn’t come to fruition. He attributed its cancellation to a corporate reorganization or a change in direction prompted by the Han Solo movie. This shift led to a greater emphasis on streaming opportunities. Despite passionately working on the script while listening to Ennio Morricone’s music, he acknowledged that his vision might not have been part of the original plans for the franchise.

Despite being aware of the challenges that come with managing and meeting the high expectations of such a movie, Mangold found the personal opportunity to work alongside Harrison Ford, Steven Spielberg, Kathleen Kennedy, George Lucas, and John Williams to be incredibly alluring. He explained that the chance to get close to these legendary figures was too extraordinary to pass up, as collaborating on a project together provides a unique connection that can’t be replicated otherwise.
