At Star Wars Celebration yesterday, Lucasfilm held a panel looking back at the Disney+ series Obi-Wan Kenobi. We’ll have more to share from that with you soon, but it’s Ewan McGregor who got the biggest response from fans with his closing comments,
After reflecting on spending years being asked by fans and the press whether he would return to Star Wars, Ewan McGregor said “It feels really good” to be back and added, “There’s something that’s opened up in my heart again.” He’d then go on to tease fans by saying, “Hopefully, someone might think we should do some more…”
While many of you will be quick to hope this is confirmation of season 2 plans, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy tempered expectations while speaking with Variety.
“That is not in active development,” she confirmed. “But I never say never, because there’s always the possibility. That show was so well-received and [director] Deborah Chow did such a spectacular job. Ewan McGregor really wants to do another.”
“Everybody’s all hands on deck with what we’re doing right now, as you can see by what we showed everybody [at the Celebration],” Kennedy added. “We’ll turn our attention to [Obi-Wan Kenobi] again maybe down the road.”
This is disappointing news for fans eager for more Obi-Wan Kenobi, but there’s really no rush.
There are only so many years that can be filled in between the events of Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, with the first 10 years of that 20-year period now a write-off considering the fact we know “Ben” spent that time in hiding cut off from the Force. However, Obi-Wan’s training with Qui-Gon Jinn could easily be explored in some fashion.
You can check out some of our photos from the panel below.
Will There Be An Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2?
Unfortunately, it seems as if there won’t be a Season 2, at least not anytime soon. In an interview with Variety, Lucasfilm executive Kathleen Kennedy said “That is not an active development, but I never say never, because there’s always the possibility. That show was so well-received and [director] Deborah Chow did such a spectacular job. Ewan McGregor really wants to do another.”
While Obi-Wan Kenobi has been billed as a limited series, McGregor has expressed interest in a second season. “I really hope we do another,” he said in an interview with British GQ. “If I could do one of these every now and again – I’d just be happy about it.”
Hayden Christensen, who plays Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader, would also “be open to” appearing in another season. “Well, it was definitely conceived as a standalone story. But I would love to continue with this character,” he admitted to RadioTimes.com. “You know, I think there’s certainly more there to explore and I would be so excited to get to do so.”
Obi-Wan Kenobi director Deborah Chow has given us some hope, saying there are “more stories” that could be told. “You know, we always did conceive of this as a limited series,” Chow told RadioTimes.com. “So it’s not an adventure-of-the-week sort of story. It’s one big story with a beginning, middle, and end. So I think this story was very much conceived to be it’s own standalone.”
The director added, “I mean, there are of course more stories that you could tell. There’s obviously another 10 years before we get to A New Hope and with a character like Obi-Wan Kenobi, I think even just watching him ride across the sand sometimes is interesting. So, who knows? It’s hard to say right now, but it was not the intention.”
