‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One’: What are the 2 keys?

Ethan Hunt is tasked with the mission of retrieving 2 keys that unlock the source code of a powerful Entity that is linked with AI (artificial intelligence). The Entity went rogue after a failed experiment and the source code is lying in a submerged submarine Sevastopol, somewhere under the Artic Sea.

The two keys can help control the Entity and whoever controls the Entity is capable of bringing the world to its knees. When Ethan learns of this, he decides that the power is too great for any government to control and decides to destroy it.

‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One’: Who is Gabriel?

Prior to joining the IMF, Gabriel is linked with killing a woman who Ethan was involved. Gabriel at some point came in contact with the Entity and is selected by it to carry out the mission of retrieving the two keys.

One important thing to note is that the Entity works on the algorithm of probability. It creates scenarios and acts on the scenario that is favorable for the Entity. Luther warns Ethan of the Entity’s capabilities and draws 2 scenarios.

  1. Ethan Dies while retrieving the key
  2. Gabriel dies at the hands of Ethan

Luther tells Ethan that they need Gabriel alive as he is the only one who knows what the key unlocks. He believes that Ethan is capable of creating a scenario that the Entity has not predicted yet and that in fact, the Entity is scared of him.

‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One’: The Entity

Gabriel meets up with the Director of Defence who tells Gabriel about the key and the source code which is inside of Sevastopol. Gabriel decides to kill Paris, as he does not trust his associate anymore. He manages to stab her but is not able to kill her as she opens fire on him.

Gabriel manages to take the key from Ethan and the two have an intense battle on the top of the train. Ethan is about to kill Gabriel when he is interrupted by Briggs and Degas who ask Ethan to surrender. Gabriel uses this to jump off the train and escape as he had planned.

Ethan and Grace (Hayley Atwell) learn that the train cannot be stopped and that Gabriel has set off explosives on a bridge. The duo manages to uncouple the carriages from the Engine and barely survives. As they are hanging off the edge of a carriage, Paris saves the duo and tells them everything about Sevastopol.

Ethan escapes before Briggs and Degas can capture him and he reveals to Benji that he successfully managed to pickpocket the key off Gabriel.

‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One’ What Happens Next?

Grace meets up with Eugene Kittridge and decides to join the IMF. Unfortunately, during the battle with Gabriel, Illsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson) dies and it is unclear whether Paris is alive or not. Degas checks and confirms that Paris still has a pulse.

One thing for sure is that Gabriel will be back in ‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two’. Most of the cast from the movie is likely to reprise though it is unclear if Pom Klementieff is still alive or not. Will Ethan destroy the Entity? This burning question will be answered on June 28, 2024, when ‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two’ releases.
