Avatar 2: Finally! New trailer for “The Way of Water” shows the underwater world of Pandora

Don't miss

Return to Pandora! “Avatar: The Way of Water” or Avatar 2 takes us below the surface of the sea and James Cameron proves his knack for strong images.

  • In December 2022 the big “Avatar” sequel wave will begin.
  • In “Avatar: The Way of Water”, the second Pandora adventure, we meet new tribes, as the new trailer shows.
  • After that, three more “Avatar” films are planned.

It’s now 13 years since “Avatar: The Adventures of Pandora” was released in cinemas, triggering a 3D boom that lasted several years. James Cameron’s sci-fi story quickly became the highest-grossing film of all time. A sequel was only a matter of time.

The fact that it ultimately took so long for “Avatar: The Way of Water” to be released was mainly due to Cameron’s ambitious plans. There shouldn’t be just one sequel, but four at once, with parts 2 and 3 being shot in one go and of course looking absolutely spectacular again.

As time went on, the longing for a reunion with Jake Sully and Neytiri seemed to diminish more and more . Certainly also because the large 3D images have been forgotten and “Avatar” has to live on the television at home not only from its visual values, but also from its story, whose parallels to “Pocahontas” or “Dances with Wolves” are often criticized became.

That’s also why Disney+ pulled the film from its schedule to make the recent theatrical release of the first film in 3D even more interesting. With “Avatar: The Way of Water” the technology is of course even more sophisticated and the pictures are even more impressive, as the new trailer shows.

Fans of the first film can look forward to the return of deceased characters like Dr. Grace Augustine or Col. Miles Quaritch, who now walk around Pandora themselves as avatars. Quaritch is said to remain the main villain for all upcoming “Avatar” films.

Avatar 2: Release Date

“Avatar 2” should release on December 15, 2021. This date was actually far enough in the future to be able to assume an actual publication in the run-up to Christmas 2021, but things were to be different. The Corona crisis meant that filming had to be interrupted for a long time, which ultimately led to another postponement.

“Avatar 2” was postponed by a whole year, to December 14, 2022. This will hardly be due to the fact that filming is taking an extra year, instead, Disney plans to always release the upcoming “Avatar” films in December and this plan has not changed. In the table you will find the dates for all “Avatar” sequels.

Avatar 2: Storyline

12 years have passed since the events of “Avatar: Pandora’s Adventures”. Jake Sully has started a family with Neytiri and together they explore Pandora. They get to know new tribes, for example the freediving clan Metkayina. But then the evil organization RDA returns, again led by Colonel Miles Quaritch. It is not yet known how Quaritch, who died in the first film, will return in the sequels.

Avatar 2: Production

As James Cameron has confirmed, “Avatar 2” is already in the can and the third part is almost finished. The second part is currently still in post-production and since “Avatar” is technically very demanding, the post-production will take a lot of time.

To realize his vision for the “Avatar” films, Cameron filmed underwater, which required new technology and required actors to hold their breath for long periods of time. 70-year-old Sigourney Weaver says she trained with Marines to be able to hold her breath for up to six minutes, allowing Cameron to shoot longer scenes underwater.
