After Taika Waititi recently confirmed his departure from Marvel, the search is now on for another director for “Thor 5”. One top candidate has reportedly been chosen.
“Thor: Ragnarok” and “Thor: Love and Thunder” director Taka Waititi recently announced that he does not intend to make any more films for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in the near future. Marvel Studios has confirmed in the past that there is to be a fifth film about the God of Thunder, for which the director’s position must now be filled.
According to reports, a director may have been found for this very task: “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” and “The Creator” creator Gareth Edwards is said to be the top candidate to direct “Thor 5” (via Game Rant). The key reason why Marvel Studios wants to hire Edwards for “Thor 5” is that the director is expected to return to the more serious tone of the first two “Thor” films in the next installment.
“Thor 5” should be strikingly different from its predecessors
The most recent “Thor” film, “Thor: Love and Thunder”, received mostly moderate reviews after its cinema release: it only scored 63% on the Tomatometer. Its predecessor, “Thor: Judgment Day”, received a comparatively proud 93%. The reason for the failure of “Thor: Love and Thunder” is said to be the tone. The film lacked a certain amount of seriousness and the story tended to be dragged into the ridiculous.
Edwards would have the task of making up for this mistake with his MCU work. He had already succeeded in achieving a more serious tone in “Rogue One” – at least the Tomatometer rating of 84% speaks for itself. However, Edward’s collaboration with Marvel has not yet been officially confirmed. There are currently no further details about “Thor 5”, such as a start date. It is also unclear whether “Thor” actor Chris Hemsworth will return for the role of the God of Thunder.
