Outer Banks Season 4 Confirmed: When will the new episodes start on Netflix and what’s next?

Don't miss

The Pogues will continue to chase after the legendary treasure on Netflix, as filming for “Outer Banks” season 4 has begun.

Even before the start of the third season, Netflix had already given the green light for “Outer Banks” season 4. At the Poguelandia Festival, which took place as a fan event on February 18, 2023 in Huntington Beach (California), lead actor Chase Stokes announced the good news: “‘Outer Banks’ will be renewed for a fourth season!” (via Netflix). This means that the Pogues and John B (Chase Stokes) will be embarking on new adventures.

A first Instagram teaser from Netflix’s “TUDUM” event in June 2023 brings summer back to you:

When does Outer Banks Season 4 start?

Although Netflix has officially given the go-ahead for Outer Banks season 4, a start date has not yet been set. The streaming service usually allows around a year to pass before releasing new episodes of a series. With “Outer Banks”, however, Netflix deviated from this rhythm: the audience waited 19 months for season 3. We will probably also have to be patient for “OBX4”.

Filming was originally scheduled to start in summer 2023, but was delayed due to the Hollywood strike, which has now ended. However, production has now started and, according to The Direct, is estimated to continue until spring or summer 2024. With a bit of luck, we could therefore be able to enjoy Outer Banks season 4 as early as fall or winter 2024.

Outer Banks Season 4 is Coming: What the showrunners have to say about the sequel

Outer Banks Season 4 Confirmed: When will the new episodes start on Netflix and what's next?

At the Poguelandia Festival, not only John B actor Chase Stokes spoke out, but also series creators Shannon Burke, Jonas Pate and Josh Pate commented on the upcoming sequel (via Deadline):

“Watching Poguelandia come to life was nothing short of spectacular. The Pogues are enjoying the adventure of a lifetime and we can plan new plot twists and turns as the journey continues in the fourth season of ‘Outer Banks’. Thank you to Netflix, our team and the amazing fans who all helped make this possible.”

If showrunner Jonas Pate has his way, it could even go on until a fifth season. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he already commented on the start of the series in 2020:

“Since we started, we’ve always seen [‘Outer Banks’] as a series that will probably go for four seasons – maybe five, but definitely four seasons. We’ve worked it out very far. I just hope we get the chance to actually tell those stories.”

At least until the fourth season, those responsible will get that opportunity. Given the success of the series, however, the renewal was really only a matter of time: not only was the second season streamed over 105 million hours at the Netflix launch (via FlixPatrol), but lead actor Chase Stokes also beat names such as Norman Reedus (“The Walking Dead”), Ellen Pompeo (“Grey’s Anatomy”) and Mandy Moore (“This Is Us”) in the “Drama TV Star” category at the 2021 People’s Choice Awards (via Entertainment Weekly).

What happens in Outer Banks season 4?

Warning: Spoilers for “Outer Banks” season 3 follow

The Pogues have impressively proven that their friendship is above all else. 18 months after arguably their greatest adventure, John B (Chase Stokes), Kiara (Madison Bailey), Pope (Jonathan Daviss), JJ (Rudy Pankow), Sarah (Madelyn Cline) and Cleo (Carlacia Grant) are honored for uncovering the 500-year-old secrets surrounding the Royal Merchant, Denmark Tanny and El Dorado.

But their next adventure may be coming sooner than they thought, as a mysterious old gentleman approaches the group at the celebrations to ask for their help. He is in possession of a captain’s log from 1718, which is said to have belonged to none other than Edward Teach – better known to many as the pirate legend Blackbeard. As exact coordinates and routes can be found in the manuscript, it should be clear to the Pogues where the fourth season will take them.

OBX4 cast: Who’s in it?

Outer Banks Season 4 Confirmed: When will the new episodes start on Netflix and what's next?

In “Outer Banks” season 4, the Pogues will follow Blackbeard’s route. Of course, the main cast around Chase Stokes will not be missing. However, John B and co. had to say goodbye to Ward and Big John in the finale of the third season, which is why we might only see Charles Esten (“Postman”) and Charles Halford (“Constantine”) in flashbacks at most.

The “Outer Banks” cast at a glance:

  • Chase Stokes as John B
  • Madison Bailey as Kiara
  • Jonathan Daviss as Pope
  • Rudy Pankow as JJ
  • Carlacia Grant as Cleo
  • Madelyn Cline as Sarah
  • Austin North as Topper
  • Drew Starkey as Rafe
  • Julia Antonelli as Wheezie
