Luther Season 6: Everything we know so far

Don't miss

Luther is a popular British crime drama series that stars Idris Elba as John Luther, a brilliant but troubled detective who often crosses the line between right and wrong. The show has been running since 2010 and has won several awards, including a Golden Globe for Elba. The fifth season of Luther aired in 2019 and ended with a shocking cliffhanger that left fans wondering about the fate of Luther and his nemesis Alice Morgan (Ruth Wilson). Here is everything we know so far about Luther Season 6.

Luther Season 6 Potential Plot: What’s next?

Luther Season 6

The last episode of Luther Season 5 saw Luther arrested by his boss Schenk (Dermot Crowley) after Alice apparently fell to her death from a bridge. Luther was accused of being complicit in Alice’s crimes, which included killing his colleague Halliday (Wunmi Mosaku). However, some fans have speculated that Alice may have survived the fall, as her body was never shown on screen. Could she return to haunt Luther once more?

The creator of Luther, Neil Cross, has hinted that there will be no more TV episodes of the show, but instead a feature-length film that will continue Luther’s story. In an interview with Newsweek, Cross said: “There will never be another TV show… We definitely have aspirations for the future and we do know who’s in the car [at the end of Season 5], and those two facts are not unrelated.” Cross also confirmed that the film will be called Luther: The Fallen Sun and will be released on Netflix in 2023.

According to the official synopsis of the film, Luther will escape from prison and face a new enemy, a serial killer named David Robey (Andy Serkis), who is “as brilliant as he is merciless”. Luther will also reunite with some familiar faces, such as Mark North (Paul McGann) and Benny Silver (Michael Smiley), as well as meet some new allies and foes. The film will be set in London, Paris and Amsterdam, and will explore Luther’s past and future.

Luther Season 6 Cast: Who’s in it?

Idris Elba will reprise his role as John Luther in the film, along with Dermot Crowley as Schenk, Paul McGann as Mark North and Michael Smiley as Benny Silver. Andy Serkis will play the villain David Robey, while Cynthia Erivo will join the cast as Lola Devereaux, a former colleague of Luther who now works for Interpol. Other cast members include Hugh Quarshie as George Cornelius, Steven Mackintosh as Ian Reed, Patrick Malahide as George Stark and Indira Varma as Zoe Luther.

Will there be Luther Season 6?

As mentioned above, Neil Cross has confirmed that there will be no more TV episodes of Luther, but instead a film that will wrap up Luther’s story. Cross told Adelaide Now (via Daily Mail) that he wanted to end the show on a high note and not “keep churning [episodes] out like sausages”. He also said that he hoped the film would satisfy the fans who have been waiting for a resolution to Luther’s saga. He said: “We want to make it bigger, bolder and more ambitious than ever before.”
