If today’s Emmy nomination announcements showed us anything, it’s that HBO continues to be adored by the Television Academy. HBO is nominated for an astounding 127 prizes at the 75th Annual Emmy prizes between the network and its original programs streaming on Max, topping the field in terms of overall awards and breaking or tying long-standing records along the way. This year, the network had a small number of powerhouse shows that dominated the nominations and made sure that Warner Bros. Discovery would have a big year.
This year’s top three nominated shows were all produced by HBO/Max. The most notable of these was Succession, which had a strong final season to complete its run and win the show of the year. With 28 nominations, it broke all previous records by garnering three nominations for Outstanding Leading Actor for the trio of Kieran Culkin, Jeremy Strong, and Brian Cox. Sarah Snook and other actors also received honours.
HBO gets nominated for the best shows in the Emmy
The Last of Us, a new television series and video game adaptation, finished in second with 24 nominations, including a historic one for Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, who co-star in the series. The White Lotus, which received a record nine nominations in total and won the supporting actor and actress categories, came in third with 23 of its own nominations. In addition to all of this, House of the Dragon, another HBO series, and all three are vying for the prized Outstanding Drama Series award.
With these films included, a total of 17 original HBO/Max productions received nominations. Among the other notable selections this year were Bill Hader’s acclaimed series Barry, which received 11 nominations; House of the Dragon, which received 8; and the hit documentary series 100 Foot Wave, which received 6, Moonage Daydream, which received 5; and Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, which received 4, all for nominations.
