The first trailer for the upcoming true story comedic drama Dumb Money, exclaims, “You can’t make this $hit up.” Dumb Money, a Sony Pictures Entertainment production with Paul Dano, Sebastian Stan, Seth Rogen, and Pete Davidson among its cast members, tells the story of the GameStop short squeeze from January 2021, when a motley crew of inexperienced traders brought Wall Street to its knees. See Dumb Money’s first trailer down below.
Dumb Money is based on the wild true story of a group of enthusiastic, fledgling investors from the Reddit page called Wall Street Bets who banded together to put the squeeze on at least two hedge funds. The film is directed by Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya, Cruella) and written by Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo. It is based on the book The Antisocial Network: The GameStop Short Squeeze and the Ragtag Group of Amateur Traders That B.
What would the upcoming Dumb Money be about?
According to Movieweb, the story of the individuals who changed the course of Wall Street and made a fortune by making GameStop (yep, the mall gaming store) the hottest corporation in the world is told in the ultimate David vs. Goliath narrative, Dumb Money. Regular Joe Keith Gill (Paul Dano) is at the centre of everything. He ignites everything by investing his entire life savings in the company and posting about it. When his social media posts take off, his life and the lives of everyone who follows him do as well. Everyone becomes wealthy as a stock tip grows into a movement, but as the billionaires fight back, both sides find their worlds flipped upside down.
An all-star cast is bringing the true tale of Dumb Money to life. Paul Dano, who starred in the films Batman and There Will Be Blood, takes the role as Keith Gill, a financial analyst and investor who has been cited as a key player in the GameStop short squeeze.
Dano is joined by actors like Pete Davidson (The King of Staten Island, Bodies, Bodies, Bodies), who plays Keith’s brother Kevin Gill, Vincent D’Onofrio (Daredevil, Jurassic World), who plays Steve Cohen, a hedge fund manager and owner of the New York Mets, America Ferrera (Superstore, Barbie), who plays Jennifer Campbell, a subscriber to Keith’s YouTube channel, Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation, The Last of Us), Vlad Tenev, the CEO of Robinhood, and Shailene Woodley, the star of The Fault in Our Stars, who plays Caroline Gill, Keith’s wife.
But there’s more! Along with these well-known actors, Dumb Money also stars Rushi Kota (Never Have I Ever) and Talia Ryder (Do Revenge), as well as Seth Rogen (This is the End), Dane DeHaan (Chronicle), Anthony Ramos (Transformers: Rise of the Beasts), and Myha’la Herrold (Industry).
Dumb Money will now be released in theatres on September 22, 2023 as a result of a recent modification in the original release date.
