Dark Season 4: Everything we know so far

Don't miss

Dark is a German science fiction thriller series that explores the complex connections between four families and a time travel conspiracy that spans multiple generations. The show has been widely praised for its cast, writing, direction, visuals, and musical score. It ran for three seasons on Netflix from 2017 to 2020, ending with a mind-blowing finale that resolved most of the show’s central mysteries. But will there be a Dark Season 4? Here’s everything we know so far.

Dark Season 4 Potential Plot: What’s next?

Dark Season 4

The third and final season of Dark revealed that the main characters were trapped in a loop of two interconnected worlds, created by a scientist named H.G. Tannhaus in an attempt to bring back his dead family. The only way to break the cycle was to prevent the car accident that killed them, which required the sacrifice of Jonas and Martha, the protagonists of the two worlds. The show ended with a scene in the original world, where the four families never existed, but their ancestors lived happily.

However, a show with so many twists and turns could easily find a way to continue past its final episode. Dark explored for three seasons what are time paradoxes and the consequences it has on the four families stuck in a time loop, but while one story might’ve been resolved, nothing is stopping Dark from making a new loop or parallel world. Perhaps in another dimension, in another timeline, the events of the last season didn’t happen or happened differently. Once a show opens the door for time travel existing, it allows for an infinite number of variations, alternate realities, and all sort of time-travel shenanigans.

Dark Season 4 Cast: Who’s in it?

Dark Season 4

If Dark Season 4 were to happen, it would probably feature a completely new cast of characters, since most of the original ones were erased from existence by the end of season 3. However, some familiar faces could still return in different roles or versions, as the show has done before with actors playing multiple characters across different timelines and worlds. For example, Louis Hofmann and Lisa Vicari, who played Jonas and Martha respectively, could reprise their roles as H.G. Tannhaus’ son and granddaughter in the original world. Alternatively, some actors could play new characters unrelated to the previous ones, such as Maja Schöne, who played Hannah Kahnwald in the main world and Katharina Nielsen in the parallel world.

Will there be Dark Season 4?

Unfortunately for fans, Dark Season 4 is very unlikely to happen. The show’s creators, Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese, have confirmed that they planned to end the story with season 3 and that Netflix respected their vision and allowed them to make the conclusion they wanted. In an Instagram post, Odar explained that they always had three seasons in mind and that they were happy to have finished their story “the way we wanted”. He also thanked the fans for their support and love throughout the years.

Dark Season 4 Release Date: Speculation!

Even though Dark Season 4 is not officially confirmed or announced by Netflix or the creators, some fans still hope that the show will return someday with a new story or a spin-off. If Dark Season 4 were to happen, it would probably be quite a long time before we’d be able to see it. Between the pandemic delays and the leisurely pace this show’s production has taken in the past, a release in 2023 or later would probably be the most likely option.
