The sequel to the Netflix hit has long been confirmed, now there’s finally news about season 2 of “Wednesday“. Here’s what we know so far.
The morbid, cynical and sometimes murderous Wednesday (Jenna Ortega), daughter of Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones) and Gomez Addams (Luis Guzmán) and icon of many teenagers who feel like outsiders, has finally got her own spin-off. Tim Burton directed it – and you almost want to exclaim “Who else?”. The expert in the macabre and morbid is absolutely in his element here.
And it hit like a bomb: with an incredible 341.2 million streaming hours in the first week, the series even topped Netflix‘s top attraction “Stranger Things“! The two series are also the ones that Netflix recently named as the top priority for upcoming productions that the strikes in Hollywood have delayed. This actually means that “Wednesday” will start filming soon, even in a different location of myths and legends.
The team moves to Ireland: “Wednesday” filming begins
As Deadline writes, sources have revealed that Netflix has relocated filming to Ireland and plans to start production there in late April 2024. Previously, filming took place in Romania. However, no further details have emerged yet. Nevertheless, this news is a good sign that Netflix is concerned about supplying us with “Wednesday” as quickly as possible.
Until April 2024, however, everyone can start the year quite relaxed and think about other things. Unless, of course: You use the upcoming carnival season to present yourselves in the “Wednesday” look. You can read all about it here:
When is the second season of Wednesday starting on Netflix?
After filming season 1 took around six months, with a lot of luck it could have been ready by the end of 2023, but then the Writes Guild of America (WGA) strike intervened, paralyzing everything. According to a Variety article, the new season of “Wednesday” is now to be produced as quickly as possible. With production starting in April and six months to go, work could be completed in October 2024. If the release of the first season follows, the second season could perhaps start at the end of November 2024, as an early Christmas present, so to speak.
In this case, however, filming and post-production would have to progress very quickly. In an interview, lead actress Ortega revealed that director Tim Burton was so meticulous that he accepted a delay of around two hours out of dissatisfaction with her hairstyle (via Screenrant):
“He didn’t like the look of my pony at the time and asked the hairstylist very politely,” ‘Hey, can I… do you mind if I do this?’ and more or less fixed my hair himself.”
On the other hand, this attention to detail is also one of the secrets of Tim Burton’s success. For season 2 to be as good as the previous episodes, we’ll probably have to wait until 2025.
Cast of Wednesday season 2: who is returning, who is out?
Nothing has been officially confirmed about the cast of “Wednesday” season 2. However, it is of course a foregone conclusion that lead actress Jenna Ortega will be back, because what would “Wednesday” be without the titular character? It is also already known that Ortega will be even more involved in the creative process of production in season 2 than she was in season 1.
Jenna Ortega becomes co-producer of “Wednesday” in season 2
It wasn’t just the iconic dance sequence that demonstrated the creativity of lead actress Jenna Ortega. She is also said to have played a key role in the character development of her character Wednesday. In various interviews, the actress had already criticized a number of points that bothered her about the portrayal of Wednesday – including the love triangle between Wednesday, Tyler and Xavier – and made suggestions for changes, most recently in the Armchair Expert podcast interview. In doing so, Jenna Ortega has already shown how intensively she deals with her role.
Season 2 will require even more initiative from the actress, as Jenna Ortega will join the team of executive producers and co-produce “Wednesday” in the second season, as revealed in an interview with Elle. We can therefore assume that the leading actress will be able to exert even more influence on her role in the future and incorporate further creative ideas into the series.
In addition to Jenna Ortega, the other members of the Addams family will almost certainly return, especially since the showrunners around Tim Burton have already hinted that the remaining family members will play a bigger role in season 2 (more on this below).
Wednesday Season 2: A new character from the Addams Family will join the cast
At the TUDUM event on June 17, 2023, at which Netflix revealed a lot of new information about the streaming provider’s most popular series, “Wednesday” was of course not to be missed. Although no news on the start date and plot has been made available yet, fans will certainly be pleased to hear one piece of news: Season 2 of “Wednesday” will introduce another family member from the Addams Family.
However, it is not yet known whether this will be the hairy cousin Itt, the quirky Grandma Addams or a completely different, possibly even completely new character in the Addams Family universe. As a result, there is no information on any other new cast members yet.
Big “Wednesday” fans can find really cool products at Zavvi to show off their fan love, for example this stylish hoodie – in pitch black, of course:
Provided that season 2 of “Wednesday” is also set at Nevermore Academy again – which is not yet one hundred percent clear – we can also look forward to seeing her classmates and friends around Enid, Xavier and Co. again.
Here is an overview of the cast members who are very likely to return in season 2 of “Wednesday”:
- Jenna Ortega as Wednesday Addams
- Catherine Zeta-Jones as Morticia Addams
- Luis Guzmán as Gomez Addams
- Isaac Ordonez as Pugsley Addams
- Fred Armisen as Uncle Fester
- Emma Myers as Enid Sinclair
- Percy Hynes White as Xavier Thorpe
- Hunter Doohan as Tyler Galpin
- Jamie McShane as Sheriff Galpin
- Joy Sunday as Bianca Barclay
- Naomi J. Ogawa as Yoko Tanaka
- Moosa Mostafa as Eugene Ottinger
- Georgie Farmer as Ajax Petropolus
Most likely, “Game of Thrones” star Gwendoline Christie as principal Larissa Weems will unfortunately have to leave the cast, as Marilyn Thornhill poisoned her character at the end of season 1. Even if fans are of course still hoping for a reunion – after all, we didn’t see a funeral or anything like that – the chances of this happening are rather slim.
It is also not certain whether Thornhill herself has survived (see below) – if this is not the case, fans would also have to bury their hopes of a return of ex-Wednesday Christina Ricci.
It is not yet clear whether Percy Hynes White will continue to be part of the series. As The Daily Mail reports, according to insider information, the actor has been excluded from the series due to existing allegations of abuse.
Trailer for Wednesday season 2: already released?
As filming for season 2 of “Wednesday” has not yet begun, there is unfortunately no trailer for the next season. So it will be a while before we get our first glimpse of the new season.
Nevertheless, Netflix has already released a teaser that definitely whets the appetite for more:
Plot of Wednesday season 2: This is how it continues
Even though not much is yet known about the actual plot of season 2 of “Wednesday”, the showrunners have already revealed some details that await us in the next season, which we have compiled for you here.

Wednesday Season 2: Fan theories evaluated by the cast
In addition, cast members Jenna Ortega (Wednesday Addams), Joy Sunday (Bianca Barclay), Emma Myers (Enid Sinclair) and Hunter Doohan (Tyler Galpin) discussed the following fan theories at the TUDUM event:
- Who has Crackstone’s ring? Villain Joseph Crackstone returned as a magician after being resurrected. His staff allowed him to move things and start fires with the power of his mind. At the end of the first season, we see his ring fall to the ground because Crackstone has been defeated. If someone has picked it up, this person could possibly have similar powers to Crackstone – although it is not clear whether the ring has magical powers like the staff. The cast members suspect that either the ice-cold little hand or Eugene could possess the ring.
- Is Wednesday the new master of the Hyde monster? In the final episode, Wednesday incapacitates Marilyn Thornhill with a boot kick. Could this have transferred Thornhill’s powers to her? An eagle-eyed fan has observed that Tyler turns back into the Hyde at the exact moment Wednesday passes him in the car. Coincidence or foreshadowing? Jenna Ortega can well imagine Wednesday with a monster “pet” and Tyler actor Hunter Doohan is already worried about what she might do with him as the Hyde monster…
- Has Professor Weems turned into Lurch? As we know, principal Professor Weems was a shapeshifter. One fan claims to have noticed that Butler Lurch has a slightly different eye color at the end of the last episode. An indication that Weems has taken on the form of Lurch? Sounds pretty far-fetched – after all, Weems was stabbed in the neck with a knife, so in all likelihood he really did die. But who knows?
Wednesday Season 2: Will this be the new cult dance?
After Wednesday’s iconic dance scene, which quickly became an absolute online hit, we’re in for a dance performance from Gomez Addams in the new season. In an interview with Screenrant, Gomez actor Luis Guzmán has revealed that he’ll be putting on a good show – will he create as much hype as Wednesday’s dance from season 1?
There will also be a sword fight. This fits in perfectly with the showrunners’ announcement that they want to delve deeper into the lives of the other family members in the next season. Perhaps there will be scenes from the past where Wednesday learns how to use a sword and dance from Gomez?

“Wednesday” Season 2: Showrunners want to show more of the Addams Family
In an interview with TVLine, the showrunners revealed that the remaining members of the Addams Family could also be further explored in a possible Season 2.
In particular, they want to focus more on the relationship between Wednesday and her mother Morticia. Nevertheless, the focus will of course remain on the eponymous Wednesday, who will continue to learn to see the world in a less black-and-white way and allow more and more friendships.
