In January 2021, the Tolkien website The One Ring published a summary for the series that included a list of confirmed locales. It reads as follows:

“The heroic legends of the mythical Second Age of Middle-history earth’s are brought to screens for the very first time in Amazon Studios’ upcoming television series. This epic drama will transport viewers to a time when great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the thinnest of threads, and the greatest villain to ever come from J.R.R. Tolkien’s pen threatened to engulf the entire world in darkness. It is set thousands of years before the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.

The series opens in an era of largely tranquility and follows an ensemble cast of both well-known and unfamiliar characters as they face the long-feared return of evil to Middle-earth. These nations and characters will leave behind legacies that endure long after they are gone, from the remotest corners of the Misty Mountains to the gorgeous woodlands of the elf capital of Lindon to the breathtaking island realm of Nmenor.”

Beyond that, the show’s real storyline information are kept a secret with a greater degree of secrecy than the Black Gate of Mordor. Galadriel’s early years will be fully examined in the program, and the general outlines of the era it is situated in are known. As we have already mentioned, the Second Age saw the emergence of new kingdoms and the downfall of established ones in Middle-Earth.

The huge island country of Nmenor was still standing tall as a powerful force at this period, and Sauron had not yet established himself as the sole dark ruler of Middle-Earth. It would be many years before the dwarves “delved too greedily and too deeply” in Khazad-dûm (before it was dubbed Moria). On the vast continent of Middle-Earth, the kingdoms of men had not yet fully established themselves and the High Elves inhabited it in huge numbers.

The creative team of the series is only permitted to make references to and use material from the Lord of the Rings books and the large appendices that are included with them, said Tolkien expert and show contributor Tom Shippey. The Fall of Nmenor, Sauron’s invasion and subsequent captivity by the Nmenoreans, and the creation of the Last Alliance of Elves and Men by Elendil and Gil-galad are just a few of the many tales that the show might still explore.

At least five seasons, each with eight to ten episodes, have been ordered by Amazon for the series.
