Destin Daniel Cretton from “Shang-Chi” is chosen to direct “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty”

Don't miss

Marvel Studios has made a significant hire for the penultimate chapter of its current “Multiverse Saga,” continuing to dominate pop culture news after its big slate of announcements at San Diego Comic-Con this past weekend. Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, which is scheduled to open in theaters nationwide on May 2, 2025, will be directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, who also served as co-writer and director of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

Cretton, who now has an overall creative deal with Marvel, is also working on the Wonder Man television series for Disney+ as well as a Shang-Chi sequel. The Kang Dynasty’s specific plot is currently under wraps, but chances are excellent that the crossover project will largely reflect the events of the same-named comic book storyline. In November of the same year, Avengers: Secret Wars, based on yet another unforgettable storyline, will debut. The Russo Brothers, who co-directed Infinity War and Endgame, have expressed interest in directing the final, epic installment of Phase 6, but Kevin Feige, the creator of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has said that they will not be.

Despite the fact that Kang the Conquerer has not yet arrived on the big screen, the MCU’s next Thanos-level big evil was already teed up as a bellicose variation of Time Variance Authority founder, He Who Remains (played by Lovecraft Country veteran Jonathan Majors) in the Season 1 finale of Loki. The time-traveling, multiverse-subjugating tyrant, who will also be portrayed by Majors, will make his on-screen debut in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania next year. On the Hall H stage at SDCC, the actor could only tease, “There will be conquering.”

Destin Daniel Cretton, who directed Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, has been chosen to direct Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, the first installment of the two-part MCU Phase 6 finale. This was revealed by Marvel Studios today. According to THR, Cretton was picked following his successful MCU debut with Shang-Chi, which made $432 million worldwide despite the pandemic’s effects.

Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, which was unveiled this weekend at the 2022 San Diego Comic-Con, would bring together all the Marvel Cinematic Cosmos’s heroes to battle Kang the Conquerer, played by Jonathan Majors, the upcoming major villain to pose a threat to the universe. The tale will serve as the epilogue to “The Multiverse Saga,” a massive undertaking that spans MCU Phases 4, 5, and 6. Marvel Studios is also producing Avengers: Secret Wars, the second installment of the crossover event of the new epic, a few months after Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.

The Infinite Saga, a previous Marvel Studios crossover narrative, also had two Avengers films under the Russo Brothers’ direction. It makes sense for Cretton to helm Avengers: Secret Wars if the next two Avengers movies are as intricately intertwined as the first two. Cretton is now only formally associated with the first chapter of the tale according to Marvel Studios.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, directed by Cretton from a screenplay he co-wrote with David Callaham and Andrew Lanham, succeeded as an independent film, only hinting at the larger MCU through cameos, Easter eggs, and mid-credit scenes. Nevertheless, the movie was favorably received by both reviewers and the general public, and Marvel Studios soon announced a sequel. Additionally, Cretton was selected to direct Wonder Man, a forthcoming Disney+ series that would center on one of Marvel Comics’ most potent characters.

Marvel not only unveiled the two upcoming Avengers films at the 2022 SDCC, but also outlined their strategy for Phases 4 to 6. For example, we heard during the event that Phase 4 will conclude with the release of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law on Disney+ and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever in theaters, with Phase 5 stepping up the pace and preparing for the following major crossover. That makes sense, especially given that Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, the first Phase 5 movie to be released in theaters, includes Kang the Conqueror as its main antagonist.

On May 2, 2025, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty will be released in theaters. The release date for Avengers: Secret Wars is November 7, 2025, which is a few months later.
