Retta has shared the reason behind Good Girls’ cancellation. The 52-year-old comedian told Live With Kelly and Ryan that the NBC show was not renewed for a fifth season because of one person’s actions.
She said, “We were very close to a fifth season, but one person spoiled it for everyone on the cast and crew and so it’s not back.”
Kelly Ripa wondered why they couldn’t just replace that person, and Retta explained, “It was a little too late to start over and come up with a new story.”
Ripa kept trying to find ways to save the show, and even suggested some possible scenarios.
Retta said, “Believe me, Kelly! I’m bitter! I was like, ‘OK, maybe there was a bomb threat at some point and then a bomb actually exploded and that’s why that person’s gone.'”
Retta did not reveal who the person was.
According to TVLine, NBC had unofficially planned to bring back Good Girls for a fifth and final season, and that filming was expected to start in spring 2022.
The outlet reported that all three main stars, Retta, Mae Whitman and Christina Hendricks, had agreed to take a pay cut, but the show still got canceled. A source from NBC told the outlet that the network had “financial difficulties,” while another source mentioned “creative issues.”
A source from the show also hinted to the outlet that Manny Montana, who played a co-star role in the series, had problems with scheduling and money. Montana’s rep did not comment on TVLine’s article.
