Zayn Malik’s One Direction has enjoyed tremendous success since their 2010 debut on The X Factor thanks to songs like “What Makes You Beautiful,” “Live While We’re Young,” “Best Song Ever,” “Story of My Life,” and “Drag Me Down.”
Despite not winning The X Factor, Zayn, Louis, Harry, Liam, and Niall went on to become one of the program’s all-time most popular acts. A total of five albums were released by them: “Up All Night” (2011), “Take Me Home” (2012), “Midnight Memories” (2013), “Four” (2014), and “Made in the A.M.” (2015).
The Kelly Clarkson-penned song “Tell Me A Lie” is Zayn’s favourite track from “Up All Night,” and he spends almost five and a half minutes soloing throughout the album. When asked to sum up 1D’s debut album ‘Up All Night’ in one word, Zayn once said it was “anthemic” and confessed he was completely astounded by the band’s success in the United States. In 2015, Zayn made the decision to leave the band, saying in a statement, “My life with One Direction has been more than I could ever have expected. However, I believe that it is now appropriate for me to quit the band after five years. If I’ve disappointed any of the fans, I apologize, but I have to follow my gut.
In a separate announcement, the remaining band members said: “We’re really sad to see Zayn go, but we totally respect his decision and send him all our love for the future.” We have experienced so much together over the previous five years, which has made us friends for life. We’ll go on as a group of four now.
He first stated that he was not quitting the group because of any disputes with other members, but in December 2015, he expressed frustration with his lack of musical influence to New York-based magazine The Fader.
“There was never any room in the band for me to experiment creatively,” he claimed. It would always be recorded 50 times until there had a straight version that was pop, so they could use that version, if I sang a hook or a verse that was slightly R&B or myself. One Direction’s other members haven’t fully ruled out a reunion, but Zayn has made it clear on a number of occasions that he “doesn’t speak” to his former bandmates. He made this statement in 2018.
