With his “Dune” series of books, author Frank Herbert created one of the biggest science fiction franchises of the last 60 years. The eight-novel series was continued by the author’s son Brian after his death in 1986. Numerous film adaptations sprang from them, the latest in 2021.
Now a series is to follow. “Dune: The Sisterhood” is based on Brian Herbert’s novel “The Throne of the Desert Planet” and tells a story that takes place 10,000 years before the events of the films.
The sci-fi series was announced shortly after the release of “Dune” (2021) and is intended to further expand the “Dune” universe.
Dune: The Sisterhood – Release Date

So far, “Dune: The Sisterhood” has no official start date. In the U.S., however, the HBO Max series is scheduled to start in 2023, just like the film “Dune 2“. Whether as early as 2023 or as late as 2024 remains to be seen.
Dune: The Sisterhood – Storyline

“Dune: The Sisterhood” takes place 10,000 years before the events of the film plot with Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet). The series is based on the novel “The Throne of the Desert Planet” (“Sisterhood of Dune”) by Brian Herbert, the son of “Dune” creator Frank Herbert and his co-writer Kevin J. Anderson.
The book tells of the Harkonnen sisters, Tula and Valya, who help found the fabled order of the Sisterhood of Bene Gesserit. Under cover of the jungle planet Rossak, they forge an intrigue that could change the fate of humanity forever.

The main roles of the two sisters Valya and Tula Harkonnen are played by Oscar-nominated Emily Watson (“Chernobyl”) and Maulende Myrtle Shirley Henderson, known from “Harry Potter.”
“Vikings” star Travis Fimmel plays the charismatic antagonist of the sisterhood in “Dune: The Sisterhood.” The soldier, about whose past little is known, tries to win the Emperor’s trust for himself, which costs the Bene Gesserit dearly.
Also part of the cast are Indira Varma (“Obi-Wan Kenobi“), Sarah Sofie Boussnina (“Tides”), Shalom Brune-Franklin (“Thor: Judgment Day”), Faoileann Cunningham (“The Witcher: Blood Origin“), Aoife Hinds (“Anne Boleyn”) and Chloe Lea (“Foundation”).
Dune: The Sisterhood – Production
For production of the HBO max series, Diane Ademu-John, known for “Empire” and “The Originals,” serves as series creator, writer, co-showrunner and executive producer. At her side is co-showrunner and producer Aliso Schapker, who has worked on “Lost” and “The Flash,” among others.
“Dune: The Sisterhood” is directed by Swedish musician and director Bo Johan Renck, who previously directed the miniseries “Chernobyl” for HBO.
Denis Villeneuve, who produced the 2021 “Dune” film, is joined by Jon Spaihts, Scott Z. Burns, Matthew King, John Cameron and Cait Collins, and writer Brian Herbert, as executive producer. Hebert’s co-author of the books, Kevin J. Anderson serves as co-executive producer on the series.
