“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” brings a Marvel hero into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) who has been a favorite in the comics for decades: Namor the Sub-Mariner. In “Black Panther 2,” the role is embodied by Tenoch Huerta and represents the antagonist of the story.
Black Panther 2: Who is Namor in the Marvel comics?
In the comics, Namor is the king of Atlantis. He is the Marvel counterpart to DC’s Aquaman. What many don’t know, however: Namor predates Aquaman. While Aquaman first appeared in a comic in 1941, Namor appeared two years earlier.
Like Aquaman, Namor is able to talk to sea creatures. Underwater, he can not only breathe, but is also incredibly fast, agile and superhumanly strong. He has many of these qualities outside the water as well, plus small wings on his ankles that allow him to fly.
Namor’s mother is an Atlantean princess, his father a human. Namor’s loyalty is to Atlantis, so at least at the beginning of his Marvel story, he has a grudge against humans. In the comics, he even seeks revenge against the humans after a nuclear bomb test destroys part of Atlantis.
Black Panther 2: Who is Namor in the movie?
In the movie, Namor is not the king of Atlantis, but of Talokan. This was probably changed to blur the parallels to Aquaman a bit, but also to incorporate a bit of Aztec or Mayan myths into his story. Namor is named after the feathered snake god K’uk’ulkan.
The abilities remain the same, and Namor’s conflict with the people of the overwater world remains as well. Namor is not necessarily a villain in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, but rather an antagonist with other goals. However, the king of Talokan does not have a clean slate.
Black Panther 2: Is Namor really a villain?
Is Namor really a villain? Yes and no! In the Marvel comics, Namor has existed for a very long time and has fought on different sides. Over time, Namor has been used as a villain and superhero in Marvel comics stories and has even been a part of the Avengers.
However, in every comic book story, it doesn’t matter which side he’s on, because Namor always puts the well-being of Atlantis/Talokan first and foremost. As king of a kingdom, he naturally gets into conflicts of interest with other kingdoms and countries, including Wakanda.
