- It has now been announced that the historical series will not receive a second season.
The history series “Becoming Elizabeth” was launched in June 2022 on the U.S. pay TV channel Starz and provides a youth portrait of the already much-sung about English queen Elizabeth I.
But now the power struggles for the throne have come to an abrupt end, as the series was canceled even before a second season.
Due to her great historical relevance, Queen Elizabeth I has often been portrayed in films and series. Among others, Judi Dench played her in “Shakespeare in Love” in 1998 and Cate Blanchett portrayed the Tudor queen twice: in “Elizabeth: The Golden Age” from 2007 and “Elizabeth” from 1998. The American-British drama series “Becoming Elizabeth” was supposed to follow up on these film successes and once again draw a far more comprehensive portrait of the well-known figure.
According to the American online magazine Deadline, however, the series starring German actress Alicia von Rittberg failed to win over viewers, resulting in only fairly moderate ratings. Starz has now drawn conclusions from this disappointing result and decided to end the story of the English monarch prematurely.
The British-American production “Becoming Elizabeth” is at home on pay-TV channel Starz in the US. In this country, you can watch the series via Starzplay, the broadcaster’s streaming service for the European market. The Starzplay channel, which has since been renamed Lionsgate+, is available on Amazon Prime Video, where you can access the streaming service’s content, including “Becoming Elizabeth”.
